Do you have great balance in life?

May 12, 2008 / by ltucker

Can you walk across tight rope 500 feet above the ground with nothing to hold on to? My guess is most people would have a hard time doing this. That requires a lot of physical balance and concentration. I believe life is almost like a balance beam. The choices you make throughout life create your balance beam. It doesn’t have to be a thing wire, it could be five inches wide, it is all up to you.

The choices we make in life are derived directly out of our minds. Bad choices come from an unbalanced mind, and good choices come from a well balanced mind. We all go through life have thoughts in our mind about what we want to do. Do we want to play, or do we want to work hard? It a question that is answered through balance. If you do too much of one, you may not enjoy your life because you might be making a lot of money but you are so busy you can’t do anything with it. Or you could have no money and not be able to do many enjoyable things in life if you didn’t work at all.

Balance. It is what we as humans strive to achieve. If you look at the driving force that gets humans going, you would realize the best are well balanced Look even to food. As we are always told by our parents, ‘make sure you eat a balanced meal.’ Having balance in our life is mandatory. It was makes us enjoyable, social creatures. It we lose our mind to one specific area of life, it is quite possible we would soon not be enjoying our life, and severe implications can arise from a situation like this.

I just recently finished reading a short story about the balance of life and how it might end ones life from imbalance. Salman Rushdie wrote this short story, The Harmony of the Spheres in his novel of many other short stories East, West. There are four characters that stand out in this story, with Eliot Crain acting as the main character. He is an extremely smart person, but suffered from schizophrenia. Crain is actually writing a story that is the same as the one he is in. This story talks about how planets rotate around each other. The other characters include the narrator named Kahn, and his wife Mal. The other character is Crain’s wife, Lucy.

Eliot begins to lose his mind when he is near finishing his story, when the lights flicker in the room. He is so disturbed by this that he actually commits suicide in an effort to resolve it. Kahn later goes through the writings of his friend and notices that everything Crain had written from a negative opinion about the world. Kahn, realizing that his friend had  believed the world was a bad place begins to doubt his own opinions. Kahn forget to realize that his friend was clinically crazy. Crain believed his wife was friends with the aliens from Mars.

Crain was an individual who struggled to find balance in his life. When he didn’t write he became depressed, however when he did write, he had crazy thoughts running through his head.

If Crain were able to find a balance between writing and not writing, he would have never committed suicide. Balance was a hard thing to come by in his life, as he struggled with it all the time. This is a great story by Salman Rushdie is it shows how he has struggled in his own lifetime finding a balance in life.
